First "Real" Haircut

Jul 2, 2011

This is the moment I have put off as long as possible with each of my boys...the first "real" haircut. I usually give little trims as needed, but there comes a time when Papa Bear says, "He looks like a girl. He needs a haircut." :( So, when I took the hobbits to the barber shop a couple of days ago, I decided it was time. The only way M2 was going to cooperate was by sitting in my lap. By the time it was over, we were both covered in hair, but he did well. LJ...well, that's another story. Let's just say that he started crying as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. He'll keep his shiny golden locks 'til another day.

Good-bye, sweet shiny baby locks of hair.

Hello, big guy!

NG is still upset about it. He loved M2's flippy hair. I miss it too. But hair grows fast. I'll probably delay his next haircut for a few months, at least. :)

Do any of you boy moms dread the first haircut like I do? Do you miss the wispy, flippy baby locks on your little boys?

Happy Birthday to My Sweet Baby Valentine

Feb 13, 2011

Knowing that M2 is my last baby has been so bittersweet and I have tried to treasure every single moment so far. But it seems like this was the quickest first year yet. M2 is definitely blessed to be the baby in this family. He is adored by all of his big brothers and never lacks love and attention. He has such a sweet, lovable personality and I'm blessed to be his Momma. He was my best Valentine's Day gift ever.

At the end of his first year, he has six teeth, can sign "eat" and wave bye-bye, plays patty-cake, gives love pats and kisses, loves music and dancing, can't get enough of his Daddy or brothers, is fascinated with the trash can, comes running when he hears water filling the tub, gives big, toothy grins when you point a camera at him, and loves his nurnies Momma.

Bugaloo Baby Shoes Closing Sale

Feb 12, 2011

Love soft-soled baby shoes, like Robeez or Shoo Shoos, but can't justify spending that much money on them? I found Bugaloo Shoes right before Miles started crawling and bought him a few pairs. They are adorable, well-made, and, best of all, affordable. I was even planning a review to post here but Heidi has announced that she's closing up shop to work on her graphic design business. Bad news for future mommas who would have loved to get soft-soled leather baby shoes for only $14, instead of $25-$30. But we can help Heidi move on to the next phase of her life by shopping her sale. All shoes are only $9.99!! You have to hurry because the boys' size 6-12 months is already sold out.

Miles alternately wears the two pairs in the pictures everyday. They are 12-18 months and he has almost a finger width at the toe still for growth. An extra detail that I really like is that there is a cotton lining on the interior sole. We have already washed the dog pair and they came out great. I just tossed them in with his clothes and air-dried them.

So, go check out Bugaloo Shoes and stock up on some sweet little shoes for your little one or to have on hand for baby showers. For only $10, you'll have an awesome gift and make everyone ooh and aah.

Planning M2's First Birthday

Jan 26, 2011

My sweet baby boy will be turning one year old next month. I have been having small birthday celebrations for the boys for several years now, with just us and grandparents. My feelings toward birthday celebrations have changed over time and I chose to scale them down in order to shift the focus away from materialism. My original thoughts were that we would have larger parties for milestones, such as the 13th and the 18th. And, honestly, as our family grew bigger, I felt like it was asking too much of our friends and family to attend birthday parties so frequently, not to mention that it gets expensive.

But M2 is my last baby. {Yes, we moved to the other side of the fence on this issue. I still have mixed feelings about it, but that's probably a post of its own. One that I may never write.} And my feelings toward birthdays are shifting again. :) We do not know what our days hold in store for us. As I hear about tragedies befalling families, I feel that we should celebrate the blessings in our life as often as possible. My children are my blessings, so when I have a birthday party for them, it is really for me also. I'm not sure how we'll handle the gift issue yet, but I would like for it to be limited, maybe asking guests to donate to a charity if they choose. We have considered sponsoring a child with Compassion, so that would be one option. I'm also considering just requesting board books because a child can never have too many books. How would you handle it?

Originally, I was going to go with the sock monkey theme because we have always called M2 our "chunky monkey". {He was my biggest baby at 9 lbs, 2 oz and was 21 lbs by 6 months.} I found some adorable printable sock monkey decorations on Etsy.com.

But that changed when I was at Target last night. One of our all-time favorite books is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Target carries several TVHC party items, but I only bought the invitations ($3.99 ea) and stickers ($1.59) knowing that I could build on the whole theme without buying the rest. I love the bright primary colors and dots. It's a great theme for boys or girls. You could put more emphasis on the butterfly ending for girls.

I picked out party supplies in matching primary colors and grabbed some dotted treat bags ($1.99/20 ct) and tissue paper ($1.99) that works with the multi-colored dots from the book. I'll probably go back for the matching wrapping paper ($1.99). The yellow circle underneath is a straw placemat ($1.99) that I'll use under the food dishes. I'll need to get some more in red and green.

And, of course, when I got home, I jumped online to do a little research. My first inspiration is the caterpillar cupcake train at Coco Cake Boutique Cupcakes. A woman at church is a cake decorator, specializing in cupcakes, so I may ask her if she can replicate it. If we don't go that route and just do regular cupcakes, I love these cupcake toppers. They should be easy to make using primary colored cardstock and the round stickers from Target. To make the stickers go farther, I think I'll stick them on white paper and copy or scan them onto cardstock. The issue of food is covered in the book: we'll eat what the caterpillar ate. You can see great examples HERE and HERE. The homemade invites I've seen are super cute but I don't have that much time on my hands and they're just going to get thrown away. {Update: I'm going to try to make some poms too.}

Did I inspire you to try your own Very Hungry Caterpillar party for your little one? Check out some other Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday parties to see how other moms pulled it off:

Of course, I'll post pictures of the party when it happens...next month. And the next Saturday after M2's party, we're having a skating party for N, who is turning 12. Their birthdays are five days apart and they are my twins separated by 11 years. Same hazel eyes, same light brown hair. And three weeks after that, it will be time for L's fourth birthday. Thank goodness, the next birthday after that isn't until July...When my first-born turns 17!

Muslin Swaddling Blanket Review

Dec 3, 2010

One of my favorite baby necessities is a muslin swaddling blanket. They are lightweight, oversized, and super soft. I discovered them before I had M2 and I have used them almost exclusively for him. The most well-known muslin swaddling blankets are from aiden + anais, but I found another great company, Bambino Land. Their swaddling blankets are made with organic cotton muslin, are great quality, and get softer with every wash.

The swaddling blankets are 47 inches square, the perfect size for easily wrapping your baby up in a good swaddle, unlike the normal receiving blankets that only work for smaller newborns. Of course, some babies sleep better swaddled for the first few months and this blanket is still big enough to do that. And because it is made from lightweight, airy muslin, you don't have to worry about baby overheating. Many parents give up on swaddling baby too quickly because they never really learn a good technique or the traditional receiving blanket just isn't big enough.

Of course, muslin blankets are great for swaddling babies, but I have also used them as a breastfeeding cover. When I feel the need to be covered while nursing, it's now my first choice. Regular baby blankets are usually too small or heavy to keep a curious baby under cover. When I tried a nursing cover with a strap, I felt like it drew more attention to what I was doing and was more trouble than it was worth. The muslin blanket is thin so baby doesn't get hot and it lets light in and is easy to tuck under baby to keep closed. Of course, the cotton muslin is very absorbent and works great for a burp cloth in a pinch. I love products that serve more than one purpose.

Prices for muslin swaddling blankets may seem to be expensive at first because they are typically are sold in sets of 2 or more. But Bambino Land has a selection of "Odds & Ends", single organic muslin blankets for $10. That is a great deal, especially once you get it and find out how much you love them.

Real Men...

I Won a Potty!

Nov 3, 2010

A big "Thank you!" to Cristi from A King's Court IV. I entered her sweepstakes for a new BabyBjorn Little Potty and won. I am so excited because I never win anything AND we really needed a new potty. I got rid of our old one a while back. It had seen better days {before my first four boys}.

My only concern about the BabyBjorn Little Potty is its size. I have read reviews stating that it is best for petite babies or those who are practicing elimination communication with younger babies. And, of course, at only 8 1/2 months and 24 lbs.*, M2 is definitely NOT petite. He is my chunky monkey with plenty of "squish factor". I hope that it will fit him because I like the simple design of it. As soon as I receive it, I'll let you know how it's going to work out.

Update 12/2/10: I received a white potty and it is just the right size for M2 at 9 months. I think that it will be good for taking with us when we go to Mawmaw's but I'm not sure if we'll be able to use it as our regular full-time potty once we start potty-training.

*I am guessing at his weight. He was 21 lbs. at 6 months and has been in size 12 months for about a month.

Have you had any experience with the BabyBjorn Little Potty?

Confidence in Childbirth

Aug 11, 2010

Labor  n.  Physical or mental exertion, particularly for some useful or desired end; toil; work.  -- v.i. To suffer the pains of childbirth; be in travail.

To date, I have had two medicated births and three natural births. There is definitely a difference during and after for mother and baby. What I learned from experience and research is that how you think about labor and birth will largely determine the outcome. If you listen to every birth horror story and believe the drama you see on television, then you will probably be filled with anxiety and fear when you think about your little one's impending birthday. Most women in our culture have been led to believe that childbirth is something horrible and is best managed with drugs. Although you will experience pain during labor, it can be more easily handled if you are prepared for the stages and understand what your body is doing at those times. Fear and anxiety will increase your level of pain by working against your own body. Your body was designed for carrying and giving birth to babies. Women all over the world have been having babies for thousands of years and most have done it without medication. They have relied on the wisdom and teaching of other women who have had experience in giving birth and have learned to be aware of the natural rhythms of their bodies during labor. Having confidence in your body's ability and being mentally prepared will help you to have a more positive birth experience.

That being said, there are no guarantees that you will have the birth you planned. Complications can arise on occasion and when they do, it is a blessing to have trained professionals available to help. But by being informed, you can be aware of your options and make informed decisions about the situation.

There is a lot to be covered regarding natural childbirth, so much that I couldn't do it justice in a short blog post. So I'll just give you some places to start for your own research.

And I'll leave you with my favorite advice: Be informed, be informed, be informed. Trust your God-given motherly instincts. Ignore negative comments and stories from people who have never had a natural birth. And remember that "birth is a natural process, not a medical procedure."

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face." - Eleanor Roosevelt
